The theme of Mrs. Frazee's classroom is "Star Students." Each student is highlighted for one week on our bulletin board  display.  Everyone brings a personal photo and answers questions, telling the class about their favorite things, dreams, and talents.  We enjoy learning more about each other.
We have a very special member of our class.  He is brown and furry.  He has four paws and two ears on the top of his head.  He is an excellent listener but does not speak.  His favorite thing to do is watch second graders working and having fun at school.  SEBASTIAN is our classroom teddy bear.  We use Sebastian in our lessons and enjoy pretending that this "stuffy" is a second grader.

In November and December, we learned about the Pilgrims and the brave journey they made to a new land. We read about Squanto and the way he helped the early settlers in our country. We created many pilgrim projects.  We measured and drew the Mayflower's size on the playground. Our model helped us realize how small an area the Pilgrims had for their journey.

In honor of Thanksgiving, we made collage turkeys using items from home. The creativity was terrific! Turkeys were made from candy, leaves, feathers, spices, fabric, cereal and many other items. We also used cutouts of our hands and feet to make “turkeys” for the hallway that asked everyone to “please eat ham or beef on Thanksgiving Day!”

To help prepare for the Christmas holidays, we each brought a special Christmas book to school to read to the class. Being a “Christmas Reader” gave everyone a chance to share a favorite Christmas tradition. We also created a collection of Christmas ornaments from around the world. Our gift to family members was a folder of special Christmas articles that each student wrote.
Pictured here is our Winter Village. Everyone transformed a milk or juice carton into a building for our Snowy Community. We had a wonderful variety of stores and homes. Our hallway display helped to put everyone in the Holiday Spirit.

During the month of February we study about our Nation’s history.  We also learn more about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington and the important things that they did to help our country.

For our hallway decoration we made UNCLE SAM.  We talked about this and other symbols of our country. We have many things to remind us of how proud we are to be citizens of the United States of America. In March we study about our favorite state - Illinois.

To thank those who have served in our nation’s military, we made valentines to be sent to the VA hospitals in Illinois.  We wish them and all who are reading this a Happy Valentine’s Day!! We read about the US Postal Service's 2004 postal stamp and created valentine stamps of our own.

We have been learning cursive in second grade and in honor of Groundhog's Day we copied a poem in cursive to display in the hall. We created burrows for our groundhogs and are looking forward to an early Spring.
Here are two examples of projects we have created with help from the educators from the University of Illinois Extension Service. We planted Soil Sammy and made water cycle terrariums. After reading Science facts in our textbook, we love to watch nature at work.
Working with our third grade Project Pals, we created flying bald eagles for the display case. Our town and our school hosted the first Bald Eagle Day and we wanted to add to the celebration.

Our favorite second grade activity is to READ classroom novels together. We love Magic Tree House books and have learned about many exciting places that Jack and Annie visited. In Math we have learned how to add and subtract with regrouping, about geometry and how to measure. We spend extra time working on story problems. In Social Studies we learn about people and their communities. In Science we have learned about animals and habitats. We especially enjoyed studying penguins and had a life-sized emperor penguin, named Percy, in our room during January and February. We continue to improve our language skills by writing stories and in our journals.

We have a GREAT time in Second Grade and are happy to be STAR STUDENTS!
